The BC Science Olympiad did a great job at their first competition at the Whiting Invitational on December 2, 2023. Science Olympiad is an academic team open to all students in grades 9-12. Students compete in 23 events that cover all areas of science. Out of 21 teams at the Whiting competition, the following students received awards for their placings:
Disease Detectives - 2nd Place by Lily Butzke and Ashley Cinto Renteria
Geologic Mapping - 2nd Place by Elijah Coffman and Emily Fitch
Anatomy & Physiology - 4th Place by Andrew Brown and Breanna Winters
Microbe Mission - 5th Place by Lily Butzke and Ashley Cinto Renteria
Students in Chemistry AP observe as brass is dissolved in concentrated nitric acid under the exhaust fan. By the end of the experiment students will determine the percent of copper in their brass sample using spectroscopy.
Students in Mrs. Weilbakers 8th grade social studies classes worked hard today in our Active Learning Lab. They are in the beginning stages of creating their own Continental and British Soldiers, as they are learning about the Revolutionary War. We also had some fun at the end!
The Painting and Drawing classes of Mrs. McMillan toured the Newfields Indianapolis Art Museum visiting the LUME (a Vincent Van Gogh projected history and paintings) on Nov. 1. The Sunflower Room was a new addition to the exhibit. Van Gogh painted sunflowers many times. The 42 students and 6 adults then toured the museum documenting several favorite pieces of art.

The Benton Community School Board is pleased to welcome Dr. Annette Zupin as the corporation’s next Superintendent. Dr. Zupin has 32 years of public education experience and will assume her responsibilities on July 1, 2023.
She began her career as a business teacher at Winamac Community Middle/High School and held various administrator positions with the North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation for 21 years. Those roles include Middle School Principal, High School Principal. She is currently in her 7th year as the Superintendent.
Dr. Zupin holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Education from Ball State University, a Master of Art in Education from Indiana Wesleyan University, a Master of Art in Education Administration from Ball State University, Educational Specialist degree from Indiana State University, and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Indiana State University.

Community School Corporation’s new Superintendent. I look forward to working
collaboratively with the faculty and staff in order to maintain the positive programs and initiatives the corporation has in place as well as exploring future opportunities for students and the school community.”
The school board invites the staff and community to attend their regularly scheduled
board meeting on June 19, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. at the school corporation administration
building where Dr. Zupin will be formally introduced.

Corteva Agriscience presented Benton Central's Vocational Ag teacher Haley Verhaege with a $3,500 grant to help the Ag program become CASE curriculum-certified. Thank you Corteva Agriscience for helping the BC Ag program work toward this certification.
